A WWI Trench Soldiers' Recipe

Doughboys, French soldiers in the Great War, used this recipe:
Slum (aka Slumgullion)
Description: a thin stew
Serves: 6
Ingredients: 2 lbs stew beef
4 onions
1 can of tomatoes
1/3 cup of flour
1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning
2 quarts casserole
Pot
1/2 cup of water (cold)
Enough water to fill a pot

Instructions:
1.) Cut 1-inch cubes out of the stew beef.
2.) Slice and salt the onions. Then, place onions on the beef.
3.) Put tomatoes over onions.
4.) Place all the casserole on the beef.
5.) Add a sprinkle of salt and 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning over foods.
6.) Place food in pot filled with water.
7.) Cook at 275 degrees, or over a fire, for about 3 hours.
8.) Combine 1/3 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of water, while waiting for the beef to cook. Mix and let it stand.
9.) Stir in the flour mixture when the meat is tender.
10.) Serve with mashed potatoes or cooked noodles.
11.) (Some Doughboys used a crust over the cooking stew, possibly using crumbled hardtack, to create Full Pack Slum.)

Note: Soldiers often had food shortages and might have used substitutes. They might have used whatever ingredients they possessed to make the final product possible.
